During numerous performances, it has become clear that Türkland, beyond its artistic ambition, has the potential to initiate further cultural and socio-political discussions and to serve as a prelude to a series of further (online) events around the topics of migration, integration, waves of refugees, (cultural) identity and racism. Therefore, not only follow-up discussions between the artists and the audience after each performance have become an integral part of the program, but also various new project formats have emerged, which are intended to address a diverse audience, but especially to reach multipliers in Turkish as well as German society.
In cooperation with the Hessian Ministry of Culture, Türkland will be shown at schools. The events take place online, at the beginning the performance “Türkland” is streamed digitally (duration: 60 min.). Afterwards, there will be a follow-up discussion between the author and performer of the piece Dilşad Budak Sarıoğlu and the students and teachers (duration: approx. 2 hours).
Accompanying the performance, there is the possibility to take up and deepen the impressions of the students in the form of an empowerment workshop. In addition to the discussion of the content, the workshop will also create spaces for reflection on personal experiences.
The cooperation between Türkland and the state of Hesse is an attractive offer to reach young people through performative means, cinematic representation and literature and to encourage them to deal with their own identity and their own role in society.
The project will be carried out in 2023 as part of the “Löwenstark – der BildungsKICK” program.
With the closure of theaters during the pandemic, we also looked for new performance opportunities, and when the concept of “online theater” came up, with the support of the German Embassy in Ankara, Türkland Digital was shot in two versions, both in Turkish and German-Turkish. When it premiered on the Embassy’s Youtube channel on 07.05.2021, the play reached around 2,500 viewers in one evening.
It was a very exciting experience for us when our viewers in Germany and Turkey watched the play simultaneously for the first time and participated in the online audience conversation following the streaming.
We continue to organize online screenings on our own Youtube channel on various occasions. This is how we discovered that we have an audience in almost every corner of the world and that Türkland is not just a “German-Turkish” story, but a story shared by all people who feel they do not belong in one way or another.
In collaboration with the International Wine and Spirits Academy (IWSA), we shared an extraordinary theatrical experience with our audience on December 10, 2019. The evening began with our performance on the premises of the IWSA. Afterwards, we all gathered together for a meal at the NEITHER TURKISH NOR GERMAN TABLE, which was inspired by the story of Türkland.
Chef of “Mittag” Fatma Yıldırım dished up delicacies of Turkish and German cuisine in a new fusion in several courses, and the masters of Turkish brandy Rakı served a selection of Rakı matched to each course while explaining the background for their selection with entertaining anecdotes. We spent an enjoyable evening with our audience, experiencing both cultures with all our senses.
